About the Event
September 24th, 2021 – Zoom
“Black and Free: Theatre and Conversation” was an exciting event co-presented by Black and Free Research-Creation Project, York University’s Department of Theatre, York University’s Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, and McGill University’s Department of English. The event was also supported by the University of Waterloo and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
The event began with a 20 minute staged reading of an excerpt of York alumni Dr. Naila Keleta-Mae’s play No Knowledge College, directed by Lisa Karen Cox, assistant directed by Zoe Marin, stage managed by Angelo Manuel Feliciano, and featuring Uche Ama, isi bhakhomen, Kamana Ntibarikure, and Chelsea Russell.
Following the reading was a conversation featuring theatre artists Djanet Sears, Rawle Gibbons, and Quincy Armorer, moderated by Dr. Naila Keleta-Mae, revolving around the central question – “What can Black theatre do to advance Black liberation in the 21st Century?”
