Panelist: Facing Backlash

Jennifer Roberts-Smith is Professor and Chair of Dramatic Arts at Brock University. Her transdisciplinary work in performance, digital media, design, education, and social justice has appeared in theatres, exhibitions, and scholarly publications internationally. As the General Co-director (with Nicole Nolette) of Staging Better Futures/Mettre en scène de meilleurs avenirs (SBF/MSMA), she co-leads the first multilingual, cross-sectoral, cross-Canada research partnership to address the needs of minoritized postsecondary theatre students and educators. JRS is also a founder and co-convenor of the intersectional feminist design research lab qCollaborative, where she developed relational design research as a methodology to support community-driven interventions into cycles of harm. As an artist-researcher, she leverages mixed reality to create aesthetic experiences that challenge dominant and exclusionary paradigms of technology-enhanced cultural production. Over the course of her career, JRS has led international, multi-sector, multi-institutional projects involving teams of between 5 and 150, with multi-source budgets ranging from tens of thousands to multiple millions in federal, provincial, regional, commercial, private, and not-for-profit funding and partnerships. She is a recipient of the Ontario Early Researcher Award.
