
Nicole Nolette
Panelist: Facing Backlash
Nicole Nolette is the Canada Research Chair in Minority Studies and an Associate Professor at the Department of French Studies at the University of Waterloo. She is also a Member of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. As the General Co-director (with Jennifer Roberts-Smith) of Staging Better Futures/Mettre en scène de meilleurs avenirs (SBF/MSMA), she co-leads the first multilingual, cross-sectional, cross-Canada research partnership to address the needs of minoritized postsecondary theatre students and educators. Her research on Francophone minority cultures was published in the monographs Jouer la traduction (2015, Ann Saddlemyer Award and Award for the Best Theatre Work in French) and Traverser Toronto (2024, ASPP), as well as the edited volume Théâtre et nouveaux matérialismes (2023, Patrick O’Neill Award). She has been president of the Société québécoise d’études théâtrales (2019–2023), Co-founder of the public digital venue TheatreAgora.ca (2021–present), and Co-editor and Editor of the journal Theatre Research in Canada/Recherches théâtrales au Canada (2021–present). In addition to traditional conference presentations and keynote addresses on her research, Nolette has explored non-traditional approaches to knowledge mobilization as a way to expand conversations about translation and theatre within academia.
