Julia Usher
Undergraduate Research Assistant (2023- )
Julia Usher is a Toronto theatre artist who specializes in devised theatre. She has experience with physical theatre, verbatim, adaptation, site-specific, immersive theatre, musical theatre, and theatre for young audiences. She has participated in a youth experimental arts mentorship program in which she had the opportunity to go into a classroom and teach theatre workshops. She has also worked with Young People’s Theatre on a youth playwriting project for their “Three Up Program.” Julia has experience with dramaturgy, as she was an assistant dramaturg for a show in the 2023 Toronto Fringe Festival, and she is currently a dramaturg for a show in Theatre @ York’s playGound Festival. Julia took part in a new play workshop with Open Heart Surgery Theatre at Theatre Passe Muraille, which had a huge focus on physical theatre. Another passion of hers is writing, especially poetry and spoken word. She was awarded the “Judith Gewurtz Memorial Poetry Award” in Spring 2023 for a poem she wrote called “Smoke on the Horizon.” Currently, Julia is a theatre history research assistant for a project that revolves around breaking stereotypes in Canadian theatre casting practices, spaces, and performances. She is also working on a devised theatre project for the Devised Theatre Festival at York University with her company, Be Right Back.
